Facebook's Degree of Separation (All new Version)

Last week popular social media platform facebook on it's 12th birthday calculated the degrees of seperation between each other. And the result was astonishing. In a blogpost facebook's researcher's reported that each one of us is connected to everyone not by six degree of seperation but with just three and a half degrees.

You can check your average degree of separation here. You can check your average degree of separation here.

But according to the earlier concept everyone on this connects with one another in just six simple steps, also know as "Six Degrees of Separation". Facebook's researchers claimed that collective “degrees of separation” have shrunk over the past five years. In the year 2011 facebook measured the same number as 3.74, by surveying over 720 millions of fb users at that time.

“I read somewhere that everybody on this planet is separated by only six other people. Six degrees of separation. Between us and everybody else on this planet. The president of the United States. A gondolier in Venice. Fill in the names. . . . How every person is a new door, opening up into other worlds. Six degrees of separation between me and everyone else on this planet. But to find the right six people . . .” - John Guare, Six Degrees of Separation

Facebook  used statistical methods to analyse the aggregated data from about 1.2 billions fb users. The average degree of seperation.

But the main point is that this estimation is only based upon the number of online users (1.25 billion) which leave behind about 6 billion of world's population. Hence we need to get to rest population in order to get accurate degree of separation.

"But with no doubt it's all clear that with the rise in social networks the world has become connected to great extent and this reduced number (3.5) is all new proof."
