Today we sit down with Anupam Chauhan, CEO of Aapkapainter.com, to discuss with him, his journey and the hurdles he has faced and his triumphs. We asked him to narrate his tale from the the very beginning.

Chauhan belongs to UP and is an engineer. He obtained his bachelors in Metallurgy and Material Sciences from National Institute Of Technology, Warangal.

He was very excited to tell us about his firm and his product, the things he had planned down the road. So we dived right into it.

The idea struck him while he was working in Hyderabad. He discussed it with his co-founder Dhivya Raghavan who has been a pillar of support for him even in times of extreme adversity. Chauhan’s enterprise seeks to empower the customer and let his imagination run wild while aapkapainter.com makes his own walls the canvas of his imagination.

Although painting is a pretty disorganized sector where the customer unfortunately has limited control over the final product. Like true entrepreneurs Chauhan and his team saw an opportunity where others saw a wall. 

They aimed to create a service which would ensure that customers would look forward to the otherwise monotonous job of getting your place a paint job. Despite being in an unorganized sector with no proper contacts between the service providers and the customers, he observed companies like Ola, Uber, RedBus solving the problem in their own way and came to a conclusion that he could solve a real world problem with technology too.

We asked Chauhan that personally being an engineer of an entirely different field, how did it impact his journey towards creating his startup.

He said, “ Being an engineer has it's own pros and cons.” He decided to tell us the pros first. "The USP of our offering is that it leverages the power of technology to add an entirely new facet to the business. For example," he says “Using our website our customers can get a detailed breakdown of the cost of the job without even leaving their drawing rooms. 

We seek to capitalize on technology in a big way.” He adds, "I was on the receiving end of a fair share of cons of being an engineer. As I belonged to an entirely different field of engineering, we initially faced a lot of challenges to achieve this goal of harnessing technology." When he was down on his luck during the initial days of his endeavor, he credits the CEO of Commonfloor.com Mr. Sumit Jain for pointing him in the right direction. “He told us that I needed to have a great website to get started. So we went ahead and did just that.” “Another memorable milestone”, he adds, “Was when we got an opportunity to provide our services to a college senior who was elated with the final outcome and also wrote a article filled with praise for our service.”

When asked to comment on the not so startup-friendly environment in India he says, "I was on the receiving end of a lot of societal and family pressure when I decided to leave my ‘well-settled’ job and pursue my dream."

"I hope that in the near future India will be more friendly towards entrepreneurs.", he adds.
